Join us for our birthday celebration featuring the opening of Culture and the People: El Museo del Barrio, 1969-2019, Part II: Historic Timeline, a display tracing the historical and cultural trajectory of the institution since 1969. The celebration continues with live performances by Aurora Flores and Zon del Barrio, Palladium Mambo All Stars, and DJ Bembona. Visitors can also travel back in time and take part in a birthday photo booth, inspired by the late 1960s, in partnership with Nuevayorkinos.

6:15 – 9:00pm | Mi Barrio Photo Booth Installation in partnership with Nuevayorkino
El Museo del Barrio, in partnership with Nuevayorkinos (@nuevayorkinos), a visual digital archive dedicated to New York City’s Latinx population, present an interactive photo booth inspired by vintage elements of Latino life in New York City. The installation will recreate a birthday party montage in celebration of the museum’s 50th anniversary, and will invite visitors to enter the immersive environment and reflect on the notions of nostalgia and legacy. Digital photos will be made available to all visitors who enter the space free-of-charge.
6:15 – 8:30pm | Wear Your History: Art Making Station
In this art-making workshop, participants will decorate their own bandanas. They can choose from stencils/stamps provided that highlight pieces from El Museo’s collection along with letter stencils to write their own messages on culture, community and identity. En este taller de arte los participantes decorarán sus propias bandanas. Pueden elegir entre los esténcils y sellos provistos que resaltan piezas de la Colección de El Museo junto con plantillas de letras para escribir sus propios mensajes sobre Cultura, Comunidad e Identidad.

Members of the East Harlem Culture Collective will be working live on an interactive neighborhood map East Harlem’s historical landmarks. This map will locate places such as artists’ houses, murals, historical landmarks amongst other important locations in the neighborhood. This map will be printed and given out to participants and neighbors on June 22 as the East Harlem Culture Collective celebrates its first summer gathering. Join them and share with them your favorite locations within this neighborhood. Los miembros del colectivo East Harlem Culture Collective trabajarán en vivo en un mapa interactivo del vecindario señalando locaciones emblemáticas de East Harlem. Este mapa ubicará lugares como casas de artistas, murales, monumentos históricos, entre otros lugares destacados del vecindario. El día 22 de junio se entregarán copias del mapa a los participantes y vecinos, durante la primera reunión de verano de East Harlem Culture Collective.
