“Daughter of Tradition / "Hija de la Tradición” 2023
Puerto Rican art by Lena del Sol Langaigne
This listing is for my original oil painting titled “Daughter of Tradition / "Hija de la Tradición” completed in January 2023.
This piece was inspired by the original indigenous inhabitants of Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands; the Tainos. A large component of Taino life involved music, expression and language through the use of carvings on rocks, known as petroglphs, some of which adorned the body in the form of necklaces. Earrings were made with gold or semiprecious stones. They also lived in "bohios" round, thatch roof homes that resided near a water source.
The Taino culture and tradition is a relevant aspect of Puerto Rican history. When merged with the arrival of West African culture and Spaniard traditions, it created the framework for the rich cultural tapestry that is modern day Puerto Rico.
