When it comes to painting & photography my natural inclination has always been toward landscapes, nature & structures. I’m fascinated with how these things change over time; ecosystems, erosion, plant species, etc., I also find aspects of people just as intriguing. What I mean is, I’m drawn to aspects of a person’s beauty — a particular detail rather than their face in its entirety. For me, the physical beauty of a person is found in the details (splattered freckles, an interesting nose, a dimpled chin, wild, untamed hair). Contemporary, standard and symmetrical faces bore me. .
This is why I’m determined to improve my portraiture skill this year. To celebrate the non-traditional, the unique aspects of us that make up the whole. .
This is a really messy, rough “not too thought out” study for #sketchbooksabado (it’s not Saturday, I’m late) 😉 It’s a rendering of a photo of Bianca Medina, a young, extremely talented dancer based here in LA. She has one of the most intriguing and striking faces I’ve ever seen — especially her nose & freckles. I’ve already made a few mistakes as it relates to portraiture and learned from them just from this study alone. The key (— as with anything in life), is to just keep going... ❤️
